For the next few months, I'll be volunteering at Hogar Clinica San Juan de Dios in Cusco, Peru. This clinic serves underprivileged families in the Cusco area. They have a hospital with basic medicine and more advanced services such as neurology, odontology, trauma, and numerous therapy services. Patients pay on a sliding scale, if they can pay they pay, if not they don't have to. There are 57 centers in North America alone, with many centers all over the world assisting 20 million patients each year. The part of the hospital that I'm volunteering in is Hospitalization. Special needs children live in this wing of the hospital 24/7. They receive therapy and round the clock care. The children come here for rehabilitation (most entering when they are young, about 6 months to a year old) and they stay until they improve, once they improve they get to go home. Some are there for only a year or two and some have been there for 10 years. Parents visit when they can, but most live relatively far away in the mountains.
I'll be there a few times a week from now until May. This blog will pretty much chronicle my daily activities with the kids. Writing isn't so much my strong suit so if it seems like a rant at times just go with it. Enjoy!
